What does it really take to build a successful business from the ground up?

In the latest episode of The XChange by Yoked Media, I sat down with Wendy Monkley and Gareth Monkley to unpack their remarkable eight-year journey of entrepreneurship, resilience, leadership, and purpose.

What began as a leap of faith became something far bigger than business.

DC Lab was built through risk, sacrifice, long nights, uncertainty, and an unwavering belief in creating a digital-first business model that could not only serve clients at a high level, but also develop young minds and create a healthier workplace culture. Wendy openly shared the realities behind entrepreneurship selling assets, carrying debt, navigating burnout, and facing the emotional pressure that comes with building something meaningful.

Yet throughout the conversation, one thing became clear: DC Lab was never only about profit. It was about people.

From mentoring young creatives to building a remote culture centered around mental wellness, flexibility, and growth, Wendy and Gareth have intentionally shaped a company where people are encouraged to flourish both professionally and personally. Their business model challenges the traditional corporate mindset by placing human wellness at the center of performance.

One of the most powerful moments in the episode came from Gareth when he reflected on success, sacrifice, and relationships. His words carried a deeper truth many entrepreneurs forget in the pursuit of achievement: What are you not prepared to sacrifice?

For me personally, that moment stayed with me long after the microphones were turned off.

Because while entrepreneurship often celebrates hustle and ambition, this conversation highlighted something equally important protecting the people who support you while you build your dream.

This episode is not just for entrepreneurs. It’s for anyone trying to build something meaningful while navigating doubt, pressure, relationships, leadership, and purpose. It’s a conversation about courage, emotional resilience, partnership, and creating something that impacts lives beyond your own.

And perhaps the greatest success story of all is not simply the business they built but the people they are becoming while building it.
