Embodied Healing: Breath, Voice, and Belonging
From the podcast:
The Human Story
In a world that often pulls us into our heads into thinking, analysing, scrolling, and surviving many of us feel disconnected from ourselves, from others, and from our sense of belonging. In this episode of The Human Story, Dr. Sara Matchett invites us back to something deeply human and often forgotten: the wisdom of the body.
Embodied healing begins with a simple but profound truth: the body remembers. Our experiences especially stress, grief, fear, and trauma are not stored only in our thoughts. They live in our muscles, our breath, our posture, and our voice. When we ignore the body, we may function, but we don’t fully heal.
Breath: The Gateway Back to Self
Breath is the most accessible tool we have for healing and regulation. Dr. Matchett explains that when life becomes overwhelming, our breath often becomes shallow, tight, or held. This signals the nervous system that we are unsafe—even when no immediate danger exists.
By learning to breathe more fully and freely, we send a different message to the body: you are allowed to soften. Practices that include sighing, shaking, yawning, or gentle tremoring help the body release stored tension. This is not weakness it’s biology doing what it was designed to do.
Voice: Reclaiming Expression and Agency
Voice is not just about speaking words; it is about expression. Many people have learned, consciously or unconsciously, to silence themselves—at home, at work, or in relationships. Over time, this suppression affects confidence, identity, and emotional health.
Through embodied voice practices, we begin to reconnect sound with breath. Simple actions like humming, toning, or allowing spontaneous sound can unlock emotion and restore a sense of agency. When voice is reclaimed, people often report feeling more grounded, more confident, and more connected to who they truly are.
Tremor: The Body’s Natural Reset
One of the most misunderstood aspects of embodied healing is tremor. In nature, animals shake after danger to reset their nervous systems. Humans, however, are often taught to suppress shaking seeing it as loss of control.
Dr. Matchett reminds us that tremor is a natural healing response. When allowed safely, it helps discharge excess stress and brings the body back into balance. Healing doesn’t always look calm it often looks like release.
Belonging: Healing Happens in Relationship
Finally, embodied healing is not meant to happen in isolation. We regulate through connection through being seen, heard, and met. Belonging is felt in the body, not just understood intellectually.
When we breathe together, listen deeply, and show up relationally, we remember something essential: we belong to ourselves, to our bodies, and to one another.
This conversation is an invitation to slow down, to listen inward, and to trust the intelligence of your body. Healing doesn’t always require fixing. Sometimes, it begins with allowing.
Don't just listen, reflect.
